Storming his way up the leaderboard on his final back nine, Chris Gotterup dominated the field and stole victory from his playoff rival Hideki Matsuyama at this year’s Phoenix Open.
Tour News

With December now upon us, we’ve entered the time of year where different tours are wrapping up their 2025 seasons and gearing up for 2026 events.
Players on the main PGA Tour are set to compete in the season-concluding ‘Challenge’ events that take place throughout December, while the 2026 DP World Tour Race to Dubai teed off over the weekend at the BMW Australian PGA Championship. Spain’s David Puig claimed the trophy, the first Spaniard to win the event since Seve Ballesteros in 1981.
Puig, who turns 24 years old this weekend, happened to be playing in his first DP World Tour event having only joined the circuit last week. He’d previously found success at professional events in Asia.
He carded quality rounds of 68 and 67 on the Thursday and Friday before submitting a flawless third round of 65. He shared the overnight lead alongside Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia and Australia’s Anthony Quayle heading into the final round.
The competition fell away however when Gouveia submitted a lacklustre 1-over final round and Quayle couldn’t come back from the two double bogeys he’d scored on the 2nd and 5th holes. Puig started strong with a trio of birdies between holes 2 – 4 before making another two on the 8th and 14th holes.
When all was said and done, the Spaniard had reached the tournament-winning height of 18-under-par, his nearest threat being China’s Ding Wenyi who’d climbed to 16-under-par on his final round. In his post-round interview, Puig admitted this win was particularly refreshing having come up short a few times in recent tournaments:
“It feels amazing. I’ve really had a lot of close calls in a few events throughout this year and last year and I kind of wasn’t able to pull it through. It feels unbelievable especially to win here in Australia and I played some awesome golf so I’m really excited and happy.”
It wasn’t lost on Puig that he had effectively followed in Seve Ballesteros’ footsteps by winning at Royal Queensland this weekend “Obviously my name being with Seve’s name as the only two Spaniards to have won this event makes it even more special. Really happy.”
