Storming his way up the leaderboard on his final back nine, Chris Gotterup dominated the field and stole victory from his playoff rival Hideki Matsuyama at this year’s Phoenix Open.

Tiger Woods has been a household name for decades. Ask anyone on the street to name a golfer and he’ll undoubtedly be the first response. His achievements have rendered him not just one of the best golfers of all time but one of the biggest sportspeople to have ever lived.
Having turned 50 years old just before the New Year, we want to take a moment to appreciate Tiger’s legacy, as well as consider what his next moves might be. 30 Years ago, Tiger burst onto the scene by turning pro in the August of 1996 and he would win both the Las Vegas Invitational and the Walt Disney World Classic of that year.
Tiger mania swept across the world in the Spring of 1997 when at 21 years of age, he became the youngest player to ever win The Masters, and he secured status as the World No.1 golfer in the June of that year.
Following a quieter 1998, Tiger secured 8 wins in 1999 and was in the best form of his career. He would embark on his 2000 season with complete focus and dominate the sport in one of the best displays of golf mastery the world has ever seen.
His 2000 season
Tiger Woods secured an epic total of 9 PGA Tour events over the course of 2000 and placed himself finishing within the top-5 17 times. A truly exceptional feat when you consider he played in 20 tournaments.
Most notably, we won 3 of the 4 major championships of that year, the U.S. Open, The Open, and the PGA Championship. His victory at the Pebble-Beach-held U.S. Open was particularly outstanding when he won by 15 clear strokes.
At 24 years of age, he became the youngest player to have achieved the career grand slam of winning all four major championships. He even technically achieved what many deem the “Tiger grand slam” of consecutively winning each major four major championships if you include The Masters of 2001.
Over the course of the last 30 years, Tiger has collected a grand total of 82 official PGA Tour wins that includes 15 major championships, undeniably stellar. So, what will Tiger get up to over the years to come?
What’s next for Tiger?
Having last completed a professional tournament at the 2024 Open when he missed the cut at Royal Troon, there’s been plenty of speculation as to when and how Tiger will return to competitive play. Now that he’s over 50 years of age, Tiger qualifies for the PGA Champions Tour, who’s to say he won’t rack up more wins if he plays on that circuit?
He’s also been considered a hot name for a long time to Captain the USA’s Ryder Cup team. He turned down the offer to represent his country at the 2025 Ryder Cup citing time constraints due to his role in various PGA Tour enterprises and PIF negotiations. Despite his claiming to be exceptionally busy (and we’ve no doubt he is) Tiger Woods remains a strong candidate to Captain the 2027 Ryder Cup next year.
Now, we may not play like Tiger in his prime, but it feels fantastic when your own game comes together. If you feel you’d benefit from golf coaching, we’re available to book you in for some lessons in the pro shop.
